Abstract
This research was initiated to screen an adequate plant growth retardant (PGR), to determine an optimal concentration, and to select an effective applying method for the production of compact Ardisia pusilla pot plant. Daminozide, ancymidol, and paclobutrazol (PAC) were evaluated as an acceptable PGR for plant height control of rooted cuttings of A. pusilla. Although all PGRs used in this study inhibited stem elongation in a concentrationdependent manner, PAC was the most effective on reducing stem elongation. Foliar spraying and soil drenching of PAC revealed the similar results of inhibiting stem elongation. The effects of more than 300 §·¤ýL?©ö PAC in the foliar spraying system and 2.0§· a.i./pot PAC in the soil-drenching system were similar. All concentrations at subirrigation system showed very compact plant forms and very low relative growth rates (RGRs, 4.8?18.6%) compared to RGR (109.1%) of control. When recalculating concentrations at each system as an identical unit (mg/pot), even the lowest PAC concentration (0.19§·/pot) at sub-irrigation system had the highest inhibitory effect on stem elongation than the highest PAC concentrations at soil drenching (2§·/pot) and foliar spraying system (1.68§·/ pot). In conclusion, PAC treatment using sub-irrigation system showed not only the best effective in stem growth inhibition but also practically required only one tenth amount of PAC in other two systems to reach a marketable compact pot plant. Thus, it was suggested that this recommendable system could prevent an indiscreet abuse of plant growth retardants related to soil and water pollutions.
